Previously, I’ve said that the ESW-9 sounds like it has a tube amp permanently attached to its driver, and I think it’s still a fairly good description of the ESW-9. It’s a very safe player, with good midrange and bass performance, but as I’ve said earlier, it may also sound dull for people who’s used to listen to livelier sounding cans. But for some others, it means hours of unfatiguing music session, while scrolling through multiple genres of music. Having the least amount of treble among the others, the ESW-9 may sound dull and unlively for some people. If your music is any of the above, then you’d better cross out the ESW-9 from the list. It’s fairly good for classic Rock, but definitely lacks PRaT and energy for the faster Rock and Electronica. There isn’t a lot of treble presence in the ESW-9, as the presentation is a more to the relaxed and mellow side. He offers a complete range of mods, and I understand he does a first class job.The ESW-9 is clearly designed as a music listener’s headphone. If you are afraid to do this on your own, take a look at Mark Lawton's website: Just be sure not to lose the screws! If you are not planning to recable, there will be no soldering required. The Denon AH D2000 are very easy to take apart. While I didn't follow exactly this guide, if anyone is interested in doing this mod, here is a link for a guide by Mark Lawton: I have also modified the angle of the pads, thickening them, and turning them to be angled more in front of the ears (more like the angle of two speakers in a stereo system), thus expanding and broadening the sound stage. This mod wasn't as difficult as it may seem - just more time consuming than recabling, for it requires extensive use of Dynamat Extreme (meticulously cut to various shapes and sizes) and Fiberloft Polyester Fiberfill as well as some pourous foam rubber, both on the cups and inside the driver units (especially touchy and time consuming).
